Being a mom when your mom has passed

“Death ends a life but it doesn’t end a relationship that lives on in the mind of the survivor.”

I don’t like to write “sad” posts because it really isn’t my personality to dwell on things that are not positive.  However, being a mom when your mom has passed is something that has really challenged me over the last 10+ months.  Let’s be honest, living life without your mom is hard and as new life chapters start not having your mom there to help guide you through the challenges and the triumphs is something you are constantly re-learning how to deal with. I often times have found this article helpful. It reaffirms that it is ok to mourn and that with new life events that sorrow may hit you like a brick wall.

For those of you who do not know me personally my mom passed away not even a month after my wedding, it was somewhat sudden and unexpected… she had had health issues but had been seemly doing very well. It was quite a heartache to deal with.  My husband was and is wonderfully supportive, as well as, my friends and family. Honestly, without them I am not sure I would be where I am today.

It is hard to not be able to pick up the phone and call my mom whenever I have a question or wonder “was I like this as a baby?!” I couldn’t ask my mom how her pregnancy was or what I was like as a newborn.  Those are things I NEVER processed five years ago when she passed away… and when these new situations creep up, the emotions can come on full force.  Sometimes honestly a simple comment someone makes one Facebook about their mom will bring up though feelings, because honestly life can be very bitter sweet without when you hit those life milestones and wish your mom was there to share it with you.

So what have I done?  I reach out to friends and family.  I have a loving mother in law and mom friends that are there to give me advice and support.  I talk about my mom to others with less fear these days…. you know you don’t want people to “feel sorry for you”.  I allow myself to feel sad and know that it is okay to still grieve and be upset.  I read a blog post of an acquaintance from college who lost her mom and it has resonated with me [PS you should follow her journey about being BRCA1 +].  In the post it talks about how you are allowed to have a poor baby day. Everyone has days to feel sorry for themselves but her mom’s rule was that that you only got one day, after that, you had to pick yourself up and keep on keeping on.

I absolutely love that advice and have kept with it.  It is OKAY to have a bad day but know that tomorrow you will be better! Another affirmation that I like to live by is “not every day is joyful but there are bits of joy in everyday.”

If you every need to talk please don’t hesitate to send me a message.  Grief and sorrow are always changing and new challenges present themselves [especially with motherhood and other defining life moments].

Empties- 2.0

I am back at it with this month’s update on my empties! And what do you know… EVERYTHING can be found at my favorite store Target!

Up & Up Diapers– LOVE these diapers.  I would say that at night I do like to go up a size though for extra protection!

Aveeno Clear Completion: Sometimes about foamy soap makes me happy.  This cleanser is gentle on skin but works! I love how it leaves my skin feeling soft and clean.  Definitely recommend.

Nature Made D3: These are vitamin D pills.  After having Tripp during my yearly lab work I was found to have a vitamin D deficiency [thanks sun-screen] so because of that I started taking these.  I have noticed that my energy and mood have improved and there is LOTS of research to show support in taking vitamin D because of the health benefits! Recommend these vitamin D pills.  Of course talk to your doctor before taking any medication!

Bio-Oil: I used this after pregnancy because after I had Tripp all of a sudden I had stretch marks. This has really helped keep my skin moisturized and the stretch marks are mostly gone and what are left are really faded.  Definitely recommend.

Crest Prohealth Advanced Toothpaste: I felt this toothpaste cleaned well.  It was not my favorite taste and the cap WOULD NOT STAY SHUT.  It drove me bananas. I would recommend a twist top Crest instead.

Favorite Baby Products

Hey Y’all! I wanted to write a recap post of my favorite products from Newborn through 6months.  I am hoping through the stages of Tripp’s childhood I can recap my favorite items. Some of these items we still use regularly!

Hope you can find some of these items useful!

Probiotics-We liked Gerber Soothe. Really helped with regulating Tripp’s gut system especially since I was Group B Strep positive so I had to have antibiotics during birth.

Rock N Play– This was a dream come true to help get Tripp (and ME) some sleep!

Nose Frida– So gross but can get the boogers out of the nose SO much better then the bulbs!

Magic Merlin Sleep Suit– Tripp HATED being swaddled but loves this suit to sleep in.  It kept him cool enough in the Texas heat (with just a diaper underneath) but warm enough in the winter months when we put pj’s underneath).

Swing– A great way to calm the fussy baby!

Gas drops– Tripp had LOTS of tummy issues so these were a life saver!

Adan and Anis Swaddle blankets– We didn’t swaddle but these make the easiest covers for breastfeeding and were the perfect lightweight blanket in the summer for baby!screen-shot-2017-01-11-at-11-17-31-am

Activity Mat– Great for entertaining the little one during Tummy Time!

Sit me up– Such a great toy that gave me a few minutes of free hands!

Tripp- 6 month update

Well, well, well where has time gone  Tripp is almost 7 months old so I figured it was time for an update!!

img_7011

In my last update I talked about parenting a high needs baby.  The struggles of parenting a spirited child are still throwing curve balls at me but I can say that these last couple of months have been amazing (minus lack of sleep… boo to the 4 month sleep regression and teething)!

Tripp has such a personality and I love that we are finally getting to see him shine. He LOVES people and being the center of attention. He is proud of himself when he can impress you.  He definitely has the strong personality of both of his parents and has started finding his “outside” voice.  I have a feeling that he isn’t going to ever be a “quiet” person. 🙂

He is sitting up, pulling up, almost crawling and LOVES pretty much any food we let him try.  He has taken a sippy cup like a champ and we are still going strong on breastfeeding.

It is such a blessing to be Tripp’s mom.  He challenges me to be a better person everyday and is a constant reminder of unconditional love.  I can’t wait to experience his first Christmas here in a few weeks!

Check out how much he has changed!

LuLaRoe Love

Okay y’all; being a mom of a high needs baby [more about that later], I am looking to stay fashionable but comfortable. LuLaRoe has made that SO easy.

They have signature styles that I can easily purchase and add to mix and match into my collection.  The leggings are seriously AMAZEBALLZ. SO soft.

I love that you can stay classic with solids but that they also have fun prints too! Styles range from comfortable to work place classy so there really is something for everyone.

Many pieces work for breastfeeding and could easily transition into pregnancy wardrobe.  WHICH I LOVE.  There are very few “pregnancy” pieces that I purchased because I love things that have more than one use.  This brand is perfect for that!

For those of you unsure about sizing, consultants are great at helping.  For reference I am 5’2″ and about 115-120lbs. Also, for the busty girls I am a DD-DDD just to help you out.

Okay first off here are the leggings.  I am an OS.  I have not tried tween yet but I think I maybe able to wear them. These are what LLR is known for.  They are so soft and flattering!

leggings

The Nicole: This is my favorite dress! It is so flattering but so comfy! Also, it is easy to nurse in. Something that many of my pre-baby dress are NOT.  So this has been a great piece to add to my wardrobe.  I am an XS.

The Amelia: Oh this dress is so fun! It has a great zipper detail and you can wear the zipper in the front or the back! It also has pockets!  I am wearing an XS.

img_5906

The Carly: A very comfy and versatile dress.  You can style it a TON of ways.  You can pull this dress off around town with some chucks on or heals for a date night! I am wearing an XXS.

carly

The Cassie: A fun skirt.  Great for work! It has the stretch of leggings but looks so professional.  It is so comfortable too not tight and constricting like most skirts! I am an XS but could do a Small as well.

The Lindsay is a fun layering piece since it is a kimono.  This has been perfect for wearing with nursing tops! This is a small.  If they made it in XS I would probably get that but alas they don’t.

The Classic Tee [Left]: Love this shirt to wear with leggings or to rock with a pair of jeans! I am wearing and XS.

The Irma [Right]: A wonderful tunic top.  Can wear a ton of ways! I am wearing an XXS.  I will say I have a few of these and the back length varies a little bit but all are pretty long!

**I also have a maxi skirt not pictured that is an XS.

Here are links to my FAVORITE consultants! Be sure to tell them how you found out about LLR.  If you have questions let me know and I would be happy to help!

Favorite Things: Handwriting Gift

Happy New Year!  Since it is a new year I wanted to start a new series. In this new series I want to outline favorite products of mine new and old!

Since it is the New Year I am starting with something new.  I have wanted this product for while and finally sat down to purchase one for both my brother and myself for Christmas.

I have to start by saying I think sometimes God sends signs in such funny ways and you can’t help but smile. After my mom passed away I had seen the idea of handwriting gifts.  Luckily, I had some things she had written now I just needed to find someone to do it.  In came google and what do you know the first site that came up was Lauren Nicole Gifts. For those of you who don’t know me personally my name is Lauren Nicole.  I know my mom MUST have been smiling down when I was searching.  So I found this great company and sent my order in.

It was super easy and turn around was great! They do all kinds of great gifts (keychains and jewlery) with handwriting on it! You can even shrink baby footprints and they can etch it in!

Here is what I got!

Mom

PS The packaging was SUPER cute but of course I forgot to take a picture.
