Year ONE

selking-0884

As I sit back and reflect on the last year I just cannot believe how fast it has come and gone.  The saying is true that minutes can seem slow but the months go by so fast. Tripp has taught me so much in such a short 12 months.  These months have taught me patience, empathy and to be more care free. My type A personality has definitely been challenged but in a good way!

So, I thought to wrap up twelve months of motherhood, I would give you twelve tips I’ve learned.

  1. Don’t be afraid to take the baby out.  It is a big production but it is worth your sanity to get out and about.
  2. You do you.  Go with your gut.  If you need to sleep train do it, if you want to give the baby a Paci do it.  Don’t worry about the judgmental moms out there you need to do what is right for you and your family.
  3. Do something for yourself every once in awhile.  Coffee with a girlfriend, a pedicure… anything to help relax and rejuvenate.
  4. THIS TOO SHALL PASS.  The crying is HARD but I PROMISE it is temporary.  Positive self talk is very important in those days with lots of crying and little sleep.
  5. Get a yeti cup.  If not you will reheat your coffee 5 million times a day.
  6. Find a good support group.  You will have a million questions and that group will save your sanity.  DR GOOGLE IS THE WORST SUPPORT GROUP.
  7. Take a shower.  Put the baby in a bouncer or a safe space and take 5 minutes for yourself.  You will feel like a new person.
  8. Breastfeeding is HARD.  I will say after 6 weeks for me it got significantly easier.  We have made it to one year and I am so proud that we did! But do what you and your baby need. FED IS BEST.
  9. Buy yourself something cute. Those first days are hard but having a nice fresh (stretchy and comfy) outfit does a world of good.
  10. Continue taking your pre-natals and have lab work done to make sure all your levels are good…. turns out I was vitamin D deficient and once I started taking supplements I started feeling SO much better!
  11. Ask for help.  Even if it is just for 30 minutes when you need a break you need a break.
  12. The kitchen doesn’t have to be spotless.  This is the hardest lesson for me… they say to sleep or rest when the baby is resting but I tend to try to tackle the never ending to do list.  I have tried my best to learn that it is ok if the house isn’t perfectly clean for one day or if the laundry waits an extra day. The stress is NOT worth it.  Spend this time with the family and worry about the chores another time.  Honestly, sticking to a schedule has really helped me to not feel overwhelmed by the amount of things to get done in a day!

What are your tips for first year moms?

Empties #3

Hi y’all! I am here again to go through some of my used products! Enjoy!

Babyganics Shampoo+Bodywash: I can’t find the squeeze version of this anymore.  Which makes me sad because we have the pump version and I hate that it falls in the tub and gets water in it. I love the smell of this and that it rinsed clean from baby.  I tried using it as bubble bath but it left a film in the bath tub.  LOL.  I would recommend this product.

Dial Body Wash: This body wash didn’t seem drying. For those who don’t like a strong scent this would be good for you.  I like strong scents in body wash so it wasn’t my favorite. This has a great price point and it foams up really well which I like. Overall, it is a quality product for a good price.

CVS Dry Shampoo: I bought this in a pinch and it was on sale.  It works alright.  I think sometimes it can leave my hair looking a bit dull.  Also, it doesn’t seem to be as long lasting as I would like.  I usually have to reapply it throughout the day.  I would splurge on a better quality unless you are in a bind!

Matrix Smoothing Serum: This is the OLD version but I have linked the new one.  This works great but honestly I like my Paul Mitchell better only because it seems less sticky when I put the product in my hand.  I think the Matrix version is just thicker.  It helps keep my frizzy hair in line though for sure! I would recommend this.

Mac Blush: This brand is my go to for blush. This one is on it’s last leg and it busted to bits the other day so it is getting retire.  I love this color and a little goes a long way.  I think this blends well with other make up brands and the color is pretty true! Recommend!

Motrin: We have used this for fevers (as mentioned above) and for teething.  Recommend having this on hand!*

Tylenol: We had our first fever not to long ago  (as mentioned above) and this was great to rotate with Motrin.  Seemed to give our little guy some relief. Recommend having this on hand! *

*Please consult your doctor before giving your child medication.

Perfume Perfection

When it comes to perfume I definitely have my “go-to’s”.  I do lean towards certain scents depending on the season. I usually stick with one or two signature scents throughout the season. These are what I think smell good on my skin and that over and over again I get compliments on!

GABBING GINGER

Burberry: The perfect warm winter scent. This scent makes me feel relaxed and cozy!

Burberry Brit:I have the older packaging]:  Love the floral crispy vanilla scent of this.  Perfect for on the go and everyday.  I almost ALWAYS receive compliments when I have this one on.

Marc Jacobs Lola: My favorite Spring and summer floral scent.  It makes me joyful and happy when I wear it.

Chanel: Chance: A: I LOVE this twist up travel size perfume.  SO great for moms on the go! B: The scent is SO yummy and gives me a little pep at the beginning of my day.

Chanel: Coco Mademoiselle: My favorite date night scent and is very enticing and warm.

Fendi: A fruity but deep blend.  This is a really good all year scent.  This is what I keep in my handy Travel Sprayer above.  LOVE this sprayer because it is SUPER easy to fill and great for on the go moms!

Baby Sprinkle

Baby fever is REAL people! Especially when you get to sprinkle one of your good friends. I am so excited for her little bundle of joy.  The gender is a surprise this go around and the anticipation is KILLING me!

Anyways… over the weekend my girlfriend Taylor [check out her AMAZING interior design company Southern Reflections] and I hosted a baby sprinkle for Sarah.

The MAJOR gift that everyone contributed to was the glider [linked here] and it is AMAZING!!! It reclines and swivels and rocks…. the trifecta of gliders! We also got big brother a shirt and mama a monogrammed robe!

Now I need to admit I did about 5% of the work on this but I felt the need to brag on my super magnificent talented friend Taylor, who has such an eye for party planning and design!

I got the Mom-osa bar chalkboard sign idea on Pinterest and I think it turned out SUPER cute!

I also made the party favors.  I got little jars off amazon and found downloadable tags on Pinterest. On the back I printed a label that said “Thank you for SPRINKLING Baby *****. Sprinkle this epsom salt in your bath & enjoy!”

Finally, we decided as an activity to make a mobil for the baby’s room.  This picture does not do it justice! It was fun to craft and chat as a group.

Being a mom when your mom has passed

“Death ends a life but it doesn’t end a relationship that lives on in the mind of the survivor.”

I don’t like to write “sad” posts because it really isn’t my personality to dwell on things that are not positive.  However, being a mom when your mom has passed is something that has really challenged me over the last 10+ months.  Let’s be honest, living life without your mom is hard and as new life chapters start not having your mom there to help guide you through the challenges and the triumphs is something you are constantly re-learning how to deal with. I often times have found this article helpful. It reaffirms that it is ok to mourn and that with new life events that sorrow may hit you like a brick wall.

For those of you who do not know me personally my mom passed away not even a month after my wedding, it was somewhat sudden and unexpected… she had had health issues but had been seemly doing very well. It was quite a heartache to deal with.  My husband was and is wonderfully supportive, as well as, my friends and family. Honestly, without them I am not sure I would be where I am today.

It is hard to not be able to pick up the phone and call my mom whenever I have a question or wonder “was I like this as a baby?!” I couldn’t ask my mom how her pregnancy was or what I was like as a newborn.  Those are things I NEVER processed five years ago when she passed away… and when these new situations creep up, the emotions can come on full force.  Sometimes honestly a simple comment someone makes one Facebook about their mom will bring up though feelings, because honestly life can be very bitter sweet without when you hit those life milestones and wish your mom was there to share it with you.

So what have I done?  I reach out to friends and family.  I have a loving mother in law and mom friends that are there to give me advice and support.  I talk about my mom to others with less fear these days…. you know you don’t want people to “feel sorry for you”.  I allow myself to feel sad and know that it is okay to still grieve and be upset.  I read a blog post of an acquaintance from college who lost her mom and it has resonated with me [PS you should follow her journey about being BRCA1 +].  In the post it talks about how you are allowed to have a poor baby day. Everyone has days to feel sorry for themselves but her mom’s rule was that that you only got one day, after that, you had to pick yourself up and keep on keeping on.

I absolutely love that advice and have kept with it.  It is OKAY to have a bad day but know that tomorrow you will be better! Another affirmation that I like to live by is “not every day is joyful but there are bits of joy in everyday.”

If you every need to talk please don’t hesitate to send me a message.  Grief and sorrow are always changing and new challenges present themselves [especially with motherhood and other defining life moments].

What’s in my diaper bag?

As babies get older what you carry in your diaper bag changes! After switching things around I finally found a solution that works best for me.  I hated that my stuff was getting cluttered with Tripp’s stuff and I wanted a easier solution than carrying two bags.

A friend of mine recommended a back pack for Tripp when we use the the child watch at the gym and that is how the lightbulb went off in my head.  I keep everything of Tripp’s in his backpack and throw it in my big bag! So much better and easier to find what I need.

So onto the good stuff…Our bags:

His [Pottery Barn]: Pre-K size

Tripp- 9 month update

I am not sure where time has gone but here we are and Tripp is 9 months old!

He is crawling like a champ, pulling up and walking along furniture.  He will even take his hands off and stand solo for a few seconds.

He babbles like crazy and is quite the ham.  He LOVES food and we are still breastfeeding. I am so proud to say we have made it to 9 months! It hasn’t been the easiest journey but we have hit our stride (knock on wood).

We finally sleep trained and he is sleeping SO much better.  So this is one HAPPY mama.  Thanks to preciouslittlesleep, where I got my tips and tricks to take the plunge! And the training was so simple and went very smoothly.  He loves his straw cups now so the Doctor gave us the go ahead to say bye bye to bottles when we do feed him frozen milk.   You would think he would be a chunk with how much he loves food and milk but he is still just 18.5 lbs.  He is 28inches long and his head is in the 99th percentile (for all the brains!!!).

Tripp’s favorite toys are cars and he loves to tear up magazines. He loves bath time and anything that involves him getting to play outside.  Thank goodness we have had awesome winter weather here in Texas.

I cannot believe the next update will be at a year old.  Time flies but I love getting to see him learn and grow!

The photo below is from a fun little Valentine’s Day shoot we did. It took several goldfish and yogurt puffs to get this kid to sit still and cooperate for a few good shots. Love him so much!
