Mom Hack

I was scrolling though Instagram the other day and came across a GENIUS mom hack that I wanted to share with you guys… all thanks to @aandar2014. I always feel like as moms we need to share the wealth of knowledge.

IMG_2316

I ventured to Dollar Tree and found these fruit infuser cups.  Even though the holes on the juice box punch area are smaller than the straw it came with it was easy to punch it through with the straw that came with the cup.  The straws have the thick ring that prevent it from being pulled out… #toddlerproof.  Check out the cup in action below.

This is so perfect for my non milk drinking kid.  So many places have juice boxes but they are a PAIN to deal with since he will squeeze them all over the place.

Seriously, thanks to AAndar2014 for the awesome tip!

How to Mom Date

*Please note this blog post may contain affiliate links!

Can we just all agree that as an adult it is SO hard to meet friends.  Once you become a mom you have an even bigger layer of self consciousness about “mom shaming” to deal with which adds to the difficulty of making friends!

how to make mom friends

Well after 16 months I can say how truly important it is to find mom friends that have kids close to your children’s ages.  You go through the ups and downs together and can lean on one another for advice. This is really important to me since my mom isn’t here to give me advice.

But how do you meet the mom friends?  Here are some tips that I have picked up since I have had Tripp!

Places to meet mom friends:

  1. Local mom groups [Facebook, Fit4mom, MOPS]
  2. Library
  3. Parks
  4. Local Play Areas [indoor playgrounds, bounce houses, gyms]
  5. Museums

Okay so you made it to some great places to meet moms but how do you talk to them?

  1. Say hello!
  2. Give a compliment! [Like I love your shoes or earrings] Be sincere!
  3. If conversation gets to flowing ask her name!
  4. Put yourself out there, say hey we should grab coffee, wine or meet up at a park sometime!
  5. Exchange numbers [and then send a text to plan a mom date]

Don’t be afraid of rejection. It happens and you wouldn’t want to be friends with someone like that anyway! The majority of moms are looking to meet other mom friends to socialize with.  Just keep trying and you will find that perfect mom group!

Father’s Day Favorites

Father’s day is a special day to recognize those father figures in our lives.  I feel like it is one of the special days that they accept the “showing” of praise and gifts. My husband is so humble and deserves nothing more than to be treated extra special on this day… I mean he puts up with one feisty red head every other day of the year! So this year I am really hoping to show him how much Tripp & I love and appreciate his hard working and loving self.  Here are some of my gift ideas for him…. what he will get is a surprise! We are also planning on a fun dinner and a trip to the Rangers game with both Grandpa’s and Uncle Sammy too!

This guy works so hard for our little family and I grow more and more proud of him [and fall more in love with him] everyday! He loves our little guy so fiercely and has been the best dad I could ever ask for.  I definitely thank God for bringing Mark into my life!

Enough of the gushing and on to the Father’s Day goodies!

First Year Favorites

I thought since Tripp is a year old I would review some of my favorite products from his first year of life.  I hope this can help people find items they love. Some of these things you may have heard me talk about on here or Instagram so sorry for the repetitiveness but when I love something I love to praise it!

Baby Jogger City Select

LOVE LOVE LOVE.  It is super easy to fold, pushes very easy and has a fantastic over head shade!

Magic Merlin Sleep Suit

LIFE SAVER.  Tripp hated the swaddle but loved this.  And it was pretty easy to transition out of!

Nose Frida

This has saved us from the Texas allergies.  So much snot and this is SUPER easy to clean. Those bulbs are like the black hole of mystery grossness.

Activity Gym/ Play Mat

Loved this for tummy time!

Sit Me Up

This was great to use to help sit Tripp up and is super light and compact too!

Jumper

Tripp was obsessed with his jumper.  It was one of the first toys he absolutely loved and gave me a few free minutes too!

Sit to Stand

Screen Shot 2017-05-16 at 1.43.02 PM

Love that this toy converted from a smaller age to him using it now.  Still hadn’t gotten old!

Chicco Keyfit 30

This car seat is super easy to install and move around.  It was durable and safe.  He just outgrew it so we upgraded.

Graco 4Ever Extend2Fit

It was a little weird the first week seeing Tripp in such a big car seat but he loves it.  This thing can last until 120 LBS! Pretty easy to install too!

Busy Board

A fun toy that keeps Tripp occupied for a few minutes… which says a lot these days 🙂

Rock-N-Play

Another life saver that allowed Tripp to sleep.  LOVED the auto rock feature.

Ubbi

Seriously keeps the gross dirty diaper smell away.

Cabinet Safety locks

Our cabinets are inset and I didn’t;t want you to be able to tell we have locks on them so these magnet locks were the perfect solution.  Only weird thing is out door pulls are magnet to so we had to set the lock towards the middle of the cabinet.

Year ONE

selking-0884

As I sit back and reflect on the last year I just cannot believe how fast it has come and gone.  The saying is true that minutes can seem slow but the months go by so fast. Tripp has taught me so much in such a short 12 months.  These months have taught me patience, empathy and to be more care free. My type A personality has definitely been challenged but in a good way!

So, I thought to wrap up twelve months of motherhood, I would give you twelve tips I’ve learned.

  1. Don’t be afraid to take the baby out.  It is a big production but it is worth your sanity to get out and about.
  2. You do you.  Go with your gut.  If you need to sleep train do it, if you want to give the baby a Paci do it.  Don’t worry about the judgmental moms out there you need to do what is right for you and your family.
  3. Do something for yourself every once in awhile.  Coffee with a girlfriend, a pedicure… anything to help relax and rejuvenate.
  4. THIS TOO SHALL PASS.  The crying is HARD but I PROMISE it is temporary.  Positive self talk is very important in those days with lots of crying and little sleep.
  5. Get a yeti cup.  If not you will reheat your coffee 5 million times a day.
  6. Find a good support group.  You will have a million questions and that group will save your sanity.  DR GOOGLE IS THE WORST SUPPORT GROUP.
  7. Take a shower.  Put the baby in a bouncer or a safe space and take 5 minutes for yourself.  You will feel like a new person.
  8. Breastfeeding is HARD.  I will say after 6 weeks for me it got significantly easier.  We have made it to one year and I am so proud that we did! But do what you and your baby need. FED IS BEST.
  9. Buy yourself something cute. Those first days are hard but having a nice fresh (stretchy and comfy) outfit does a world of good.
  10. Continue taking your pre-natals and have lab work done to make sure all your levels are good…. turns out I was vitamin D deficient and once I started taking supplements I started feeling SO much better!
  11. Ask for help.  Even if it is just for 30 minutes when you need a break you need a break.
  12. The kitchen doesn’t have to be spotless.  This is the hardest lesson for me… they say to sleep or rest when the baby is resting but I tend to try to tackle the never ending to do list.  I have tried my best to learn that it is ok if the house isn’t perfectly clean for one day or if the laundry waits an extra day. The stress is NOT worth it.  Spend this time with the family and worry about the chores another time.  Honestly, sticking to a schedule has really helped me to not feel overwhelmed by the amount of things to get done in a day!

What are your tips for first year moms?

My First Mother’s Day + Gift Ideas

I know, I know. I was a mother when I was pregnant but this year is so special having Tripp in my arms to snuggle and hug(he was born TWO days after Mother’s Day last year). These last few years Mother’s Day has honestly been very sad. It is hard watching so many people celebrate with their mom and you don’t get to do that.

I love that this year has brought new meaning to this holiday. I am so thankful that God chose Tripp to be my little one. He has shown me unconditional love that I have never known. He has taught me to be more carefree and less uptight. He has taught me patience and understanding and that with one little grin that he can get out of a lot of trouble.

I can’t wait to spend this Mother’s Day with my little family. Really that is the best gift of all BUT if you were to ask me some fun gift ideas for moms here is what I would suggest!

Pampering is ALWAYS a good idea for mom so a massage or mani/pedi gift card are safe bets! Click to photos below for direct links!

Being a mom when your mom has passed

“Death ends a life but it doesn’t end a relationship that lives on in the mind of the survivor.”

I don’t like to write “sad” posts because it really isn’t my personality to dwell on things that are not positive.  However, being a mom when your mom has passed is something that has really challenged me over the last 10+ months.  Let’s be honest, living life without your mom is hard and as new life chapters start not having your mom there to help guide you through the challenges and the triumphs is something you are constantly re-learning how to deal with. I often times have found this article helpful. It reaffirms that it is ok to mourn and that with new life events that sorrow may hit you like a brick wall.

For those of you who do not know me personally my mom passed away not even a month after my wedding, it was somewhat sudden and unexpected… she had had health issues but had been seemly doing very well. It was quite a heartache to deal with.  My husband was and is wonderfully supportive, as well as, my friends and family. Honestly, without them I am not sure I would be where I am today.

It is hard to not be able to pick up the phone and call my mom whenever I have a question or wonder “was I like this as a baby?!” I couldn’t ask my mom how her pregnancy was or what I was like as a newborn.  Those are things I NEVER processed five years ago when she passed away… and when these new situations creep up, the emotions can come on full force.  Sometimes honestly a simple comment someone makes one Facebook about their mom will bring up though feelings, because honestly life can be very bitter sweet without when you hit those life milestones and wish your mom was there to share it with you.

So what have I done?  I reach out to friends and family.  I have a loving mother in law and mom friends that are there to give me advice and support.  I talk about my mom to others with less fear these days…. you know you don’t want people to “feel sorry for you”.  I allow myself to feel sad and know that it is okay to still grieve and be upset.  I read a blog post of an acquaintance from college who lost her mom and it has resonated with me [PS you should follow her journey about being BRCA1 +].  In the post it talks about how you are allowed to have a poor baby day. Everyone has days to feel sorry for themselves but her mom’s rule was that that you only got one day, after that, you had to pick yourself up and keep on keeping on.

I absolutely love that advice and have kept with it.  It is OKAY to have a bad day but know that tomorrow you will be better! Another affirmation that I like to live by is “not every day is joyful but there are bits of joy in everyday.”

If you every need to talk please don’t hesitate to send me a message.  Grief and sorrow are always changing and new challenges present themselves [especially with motherhood and other defining life moments].
